Yesterday I received for my (late) birthday a HDD Mediacenter Box (the dane-elec so smart, click here for specs).

The box come with a NDAS (more info here) technology used to dinamically connect a storage (the HDD box) via networks (both ethernet and wifi) and usb with multiple clients that concurrently read and write data from/to disk.

Unfortunally Ubuntu does not have native support for such technology but ximeta made available a suite of kernel modules and daemons (you can find both packages here and all installation instructions here

After package installation I was able to mount the drive without any cable. I’ve transferred a divx to the hdd (the caprica pilot, for instance), connected the hdd to my LED TV with the hdmi cable provided with the box and start watching the video.

But…. no sound went out from speakers. Damn! I thought was a codec problem, so I’ve attached the box by using the old fashion AV cables and (even if on a merely 576i sd mode) sound came out loudy (oops… I forgot to lower the TV volume….).

Then I’ve tried to connect another HDMI device (my lenovo sl500) using that hdmi cable and port and the audio came out, again.

So I’ve opened a ticket to the dane-elec asking if it would be a well known issue maybe resolved by menas of a new firmware version (in any case I’ve installed the last available firmware from the dane-elec site in the support section).

Dane-elec today replied to my ticket stating that the box is a HDMI 1.1 box and my TV, maybe HDMI 1.2, does not implements a retro-compatibility to 1.1 standard. They suggested contacting Samsung for a solution (another firmware installation, for sure. Nowadays there is a firmware for any device. Tomorro I will download a new firmware for my Swatch…).

I’ve checked my TV specs and, as I thought, it implements HDMI version 1.3… I don’t really know the differences between 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 (search for them on wikipedia) but maybe this is the way to the solution. Is it possible to set one of the four HDMI ports to a downlevel version?

I’ve googled a lot finding nothing. Then I’ve decided to play a little with the service menu of the TV  (you can access the service menu by pressing in sequence the info, menu, mute, power buttons on TV remote when the TV is in standby).

The menu is really huge and there are tons of parameters with an obscure meaning to me….

I’ve browsed all the menus reading all the menu items and all the menu options… until…. eheheh I’ve found What I needed!

Choose Options->EDID in the service menu. Select EDID ON/OFF and choose ON. Press Return and select EDID 1.2 PORT. Choose HDMIx (with x the port you want to use as HDMI 1.2) and connect the box to that port (I’ve choosed HDMI2).

Now power off the TV then power on it again (to close the service menu) and enjoy your movie with sound.

In doing this, also the first and third button on the touchpad are swapped and tapping no longer works as expected (because is mapped to third button click).

This is a little frustrating mostly if you (as I do) prefer tapping for both click and for drag and drop. To resolve this issue you have play a little with Synaptics configuration and Gnome Sessions.

This guide suppose you are using Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10), but I think it works (with some adjustments) with previous Ubuntui versions and also with other distros.

First we have to enable shared memory for synaptic touchpad. For Ubuntu 8.10 you can follow the instructions below. For all the Ubuntu version you can also check here.

Create the file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi

sudo gedit /etc/hal/fdi/policy/shmconfig.fdi

and paste into it the following lines:

The package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, installed by default, contains the synclient utility. We’ll use that utility to set the touchpad tapping.

create and open a file into your $HOME/bin directory:

gedit $HOME/bin/gnome-left-hand

and copy in it the following lines:

# This script contains gnome settings for left-handed people
#swap tap settings from button1 to button3
synclient TapButton1=3

Save and close.

Let the file executable by issuing the following command (in a shell):

chmod u+x $HOME/bin/gnome-left-hand

Now you have to add the script to the list of ones loaded in your session. Simply open System->Preferences->Sessions and click on the Add button.

In the popup:

in the Name: field write “Left-Hand Settings script”

in the Command: field write /home/yourusername/bin/gnome-left-hand

you can leave the Descritpion: field blank.

Click onv the Add button, close the panel, logoff and login and you will have the tapping working as expected.

If you want to change the mouse cursors as well and want to use a left-hand mouse coursor theme, please read this post I wrote.

First you have to install a cursor theme that supports left-handed people. Ubuntu and Debian standard repos have the very nice comix cursors theme. Ubuntu does not install a very usefull (for me) utility gcursor. It give you a nice GUI to select the cursor theme for your user. With Ubuntu simply install the cursor theme and gcursor and thas follows:

sudo apt-get install comixcursors gcursor

Now simply go in System->Preferences->Cursor Selection and choose the cursor theme you prefer.

Edit: Karmic comes with tetronimo module but it does not load it…. Simply go and edit the /etc/modules file and add the lenovo-sl-laptop at the end of the list. Automagically all buttons will work again.

First, download from here the tarball of the kernel module made by Alexandre Rostovtsev.

Extract it into a directory, build the module and copy it to the modules directory:

Blacklist thinkpad_acpi module, as it simply doesn’t load.
To do that, edit the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist &

and add the following line to the end of file

blacklist thinkpad-acpi

save and close.

Edit /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup by adding the following lines after the:

Edit:

Canonical has released Ubuntu 9.04 and hotkey-setup is completely different from the 8.10 version. If you upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 the hotkey-setup file coming from 9.04 has to be “patched” as follows, adding the two bold lines after the do_video call:

Now let’s set some options for the module.

Create the file /etc/modprobe.d/lenovo-sl-laptop.conf

Now we have to restart the modules:

sudo /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup stop
sudo /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup start

and you will be able to use (almost) all the special keys of your laptop.

Edit: For all of you that upgraded to 9.04 and experience warning about lenovo-sl-laptop.modprobe file, simply rename it to lenovo-sl-laptop.conf. I edited the guide to ensure the correct naming convention.

The only special key that won’t work will be Fn+F8. If you want also use the Fn+F8 (ultranav) key you have to hack a little bit more:

First we have to enable shared memory for synaptic touchpad.

Ubuntu doesn’t installs, by default, the very useful tool notify-send. Install it with apt-get:

Now we must create a script to be launched when we press the Fn+F8 key. This script will simply toggle the touchpad status.
let’s make a directory to store the script:

sudo mkdir /usr/share/hotkey-setup/gconf-commands

Now let’s create the file /usr/share/hotkey-setup/gconf-commands/synaptic-touchpad-toggle

The lenovo-sl-module echoes the keycode 148 (or the X equivalent XF86Launch1) when we press Fn+F8.

To let gnome launch the script we just created we have to add a copule of keys in gconf:

Edit: Jaunty Jackalope added a new feature in the keyboard shortcuts thal let every user to define a custom action. The previous gconf hack doesn’t work anymore and must be changed as follows (the first two lines simply reset the previous hack):

Now by pressing the Fn+F8 the touchpad will toggle from Enabled to Disabled with a notification message.

I hope this guide will help you. I also hope Alexandre module will be added to the kernel as soon as possible.

Il sito, realizzato da Elastic di cui sono A.D. e direttore tecnico, si ispira a quella analoga realizzata per le primarie degli stati uniti: 10 questions anche se differisce da essa soprattutto dal punto di vista tecnico.

Ed è proprio degli aspetti tecnici e dei tempi di realizzazione che voglio parlare in questo mio post.

Da quando sono in Elastic, mi sono imposto di non inventare l’acqua calda, gli scaldabagno e i boiler funzionano egregiamente ed assolvono in modo perfetto al loro compito. Per questo, occupandomi di comunicazione su internet e quindi (tradotto in strumenti) di siti web, una delle prime scelte è stata quella di una piattaforma rigorosamente open-source che potesse offrire una base di partenza per (quasi) tutte le esigenze e le idee (a volte pazze) partorite da Nicola Mattina e che praticamente sempre debbono avere un tempo di realizzazione pressoché uguale a quello di ideazione (e vaglielo a spiegare che non è proprio la stessa cosa…).

La piattaforma cms che abbiamo deciso di utilizzare è Drupal nella sua versione 5. In effetti è da poco uscita la versione 6 ma la reputo ancora troppo “immatura” e priva di quei moduli che di fatto sono diventati un must (come ad esempio views).

Per la realizzazione di questo progetto (e sempre rispettando gli inventori dell’acqua calda), oltre ai moduli core presenti nel cms, abbiamo utilizzato anche:

• CCK: Content, Embed Media Field, Embed Video field (modificato da noi per permettere l’instant preview del video)
• Captcha e Image Captcha
• Vote up-down (modificato da noi per integrarsi con captcha e per estendere i meccanismi di votazione ajax)
• Forward
• Service Links
• Share
• Tagadelic
• Views
• Views-bonus (modificando la grid-view per gestire l’intero nodo come singolo field in visualizzazione teaser o full)

Il resto è tema e molto javascript (spesso completamente riscritto rispetto a quello fornito dai suddetti moduli) utilizzato per massimizzare l’uso di AJAX all’interno del sito (prevalentemente per la gestione delle votazioni e il corretto refresh dei widget).

Qualcuno potrebbe obiettare che non è nella filosofia di Drupal modificare un modulo. Io dico “dipende”. Se la modifica lo arricchisce senza snaturare il “modus-operandi” previsto dal suo ideatore io sono convinto del contrario: è cosa buona e giusta modificarlo.

In ogni caso, l’adozione di Drupal esteso dai suddetti moduli, ci ha permesso di iniziare disponendo di un semi-lavorato abastanza “vicino” alle esigenze dettate dai requisiti (in parte ereditati da 10 questions ma spesso frutto di lunghe riunioni tra me Nicola e Glauco).

Dovendo realizzare solamente le modifiche del caso, siamo riusciti nell’impresa di produrre “from-scratch” il sito (avendo anche l’onere di dover erigere tutto l’ambiente di esercizio applicativo, di sistema e di rete) in soli 5 giorni (e un paio di notti….) dei quali 3 per realizzare le funzionalità e quasi 4 per gestire le incompatibilità tra browser (con buona pace del rispetto degli standard e dei relativi test di compatibilità).

A parte un piccolo bug iniziale (subito sfruttato dai furbacchioni per adoperarsi in quella che spesso in parlamento è prassi e cioè la votazione multipla – arrivando ad autovotarsi anche 25 volte in un minuto) non abbiamo (ancora) riscontrato grandi defiances.

L’ambiente di esercizio utilizzato è una macchina virtuale Amazon su cui abbiamo installato una AMI preconfezionata con una Gutsy Gibbon Ubuntu.

La macchina è essenzialmente un server LAMP con Apache 2, MySql 5 e PHP 5 che abbiamo tirato su in un paio di ore io e Glauco su cui abbiamo poi effettuato il deploy di Drupal e del Database (un’altra oretta).

Sono abbastanza soddisfatto del risultato tecnico e sono sorpreso dalla rapidità con cui abbiamo realizzato il tutto (merito di Drupal o nostro?)….

In questo post Vi racconto le mie disavventure con mamma Telecom.

Nell’ormai lontano 2002 mi sono trasferito in una zona residenziale alla periferia della città e ho chiesto il trasloco della linea ISDN. Dopo un mese di attesa (e svariate telefonate al 187) ho per caso incontrato un tecnico Sirti il quale mi ha chiaramente detto che per problemi di centrale non era possibile traslocare la linea digitale nella mia zona (ma allora perché il call center non me lo ha fatto notare??). Ho chiamato nuovamente il 187 richiedendo la trasformazione dell’utenza e dopo 3 giorni ho avuto la linea PSTN installata.

Successivamente, per questioni professionali, ho richiesto l’attivazione di una linea ADSL ottenendo sempre la stessa risposta: “Ci dispiace ma il servizio non è disponibile nella sua zona”. Mi sono rivolto a Wind, Fastweb e nessuno è stato in grado di fornirmi questo servizio (Wind ha addirittura avviato la procedura di attivazione di una nuova linea telefonica assicurandomi che, in questo modo, l’attivazione della linea ADSL sarebbe stata automatica… non vi dico il risultato).

La cosa frustrante è che spostandosi di 350 metri (la via parallela a quella in cui abito) il servizio è disponibile.

Per 5 anni ho quindi convissuto con l’impossibilità di attivare un qualunque tipo di linea ADSL , fino ad una settimana fà…..

Ero in ufficio e squilla il cellulare, è la Telecom che mi informa della disponibilità di 4 numeri a cui attivare la linea ADSL (??!!??). Richiedo subito l’attivazione di alice flat 2MBit (l’unica disponibile) con router in comodato d’uso.

Dopo alcuni giorni arriva il router e predispongo l’impianto di casa al fine di flitrare adeguatamente le prese su cui sono attestati i telefoni (applicando i famigerati filtri adsl ad ogni presa). Il router non aggancia (ma è normale, a livello di rete il servizio non è ancora attivo, come sottolineatomi dall’operatore 187) ma i telefoni funzionano tutti.

Ieri, mentre ero al telefono di casa, cade la linea e da quel momento è tutto muto.

Sono andato a controllare il router… si era connesso. Completo la registrazione e comincio a navigare… Però la linea telefonica rimane muta.

Allora provo a isolare il modem staccandolo dalla linea.. niente. Stacco tutti i telefoni tranne il Sirio.. niente tutto muto. Provo con altri tre telefoni.. tutto tace. Il bello è che se chiamo casa sembra che il telefono squilli ma in realtà a casa non squilla nulla e se alzo la cornetta dall’altra parte continua a squillare.

Non vi dico l’ira di parenti e amici che sistematicamente mi chiedono: ma perché non rispondi più al telefono? Che ti ho fatto?

Ho immediatamente chiamato il 187 aprendo un guasto alla linea…. dovrò aspettare tre giorni prima di poter effettuare un nuovo sollecito, sperando che non sia necessario.

Quindi la mia epopea non è terminata. Adesso ho la linea ADSL ma non telefono e non ricevo telefonate.

In buona sostanza ho la disponibilità di un servizio “accessorio” (ADSL) al costo di non disporre più di un servizio “primario” (la linea telefonica). Questo la dice lunga sull’efficienza dei sistemi di provisioning adottati da Telecom Italia.

Mi sono accorto che, tanto per cambiare, le offerte sono difficilmente confrontabili se non dopo un attento studio dei costi fissi, i volumi garantiti, i costi oltre soglia, quelli di setup, la presenza o meno in comodato della scheda pc card o del modem e quant’altro.

Su suggerimento di Nicola Mattina ho anche individuato un operatore (credo di livello 2 o 3, quindi privo di rete propria) che offre una soluzione interessante.

Mi sono armato di foglio excel e ho fatto dapprima una tabella riassuntiva delle offerte di maggiore interesse per me.

I dati sono estratti dai rispettivi siti per le offerte indicate.

Anche qui la situazione però non è chiarissima e quindi ho simulato alcuni scenari di utilizzo riferendomi ai costi indicati in tabella.

Ne è uscito fuori il grafico seguente:

Come è possibile vedere per traffico entro i 340MB/giorno sono tutti entro la propria soglia e quindi l’offerta più conveniente sarebbe quella dell’operatore clic (anche se bisogna aggiungere il costo della pc card che deve essere acquistata da loro).
Tre, a fronte di un costo di attivazione di 19 o 99 euro viaggia sugli stessi livelli, offrendo, a mio parere, una maggiore garanzia. Attenti però che qui c’è il trucco. Infatti se non si è in copertura TRE, anche se non si è superata la soglia settimanale si pagano ben 2 € al MB di traffico (che è la somma di quello ricevuto e quello trasmesso).
Questo fa si che in zone con cattiva copertura tre renda l’offerta poco (anzi pochissimo) allettante.
Vodafone e TIM fanno pagare caro lo sforamento della soglia (se si supera il traffico per solo l’1% ci si ritrovano in bolletta dai 52 ai 120€ in più al mese).
Comunque stesso discorso vale per TRE e Click, sebbene tale superamento avvenga ben oltre la soglia imposta da TIM e Vodafone.

Un discorso a parte va fatto per Wind. Sebbene abbia problemi di copertura analoghi a quelli di tre, la sua tariffa (90€/bimestre) è veramente all inclusive anche se il costo è abbastanza elevato.
Quest’ultima soluzione la consiglierei come replacement per coloro che hanno necessità di alti volumi di traffico in assenza di ADSL.
Tutte le soluzioni prevedono velocità massime (teoriche) fino a 3.6Mbit/secondo (circa 380KBytes/secondo) anche se nella realtà tale limite difficilmente si riesce a raggiungere.

A mio parere l’offerta tre è meglio modulata, a patto di stare spesso in copertura TRE. Andrebbe indagato un po il doscorso di clic in termini affidabilità del servizio.

Come ho avuto modo di commentare in altri blog, il pubcamp è stato piuttosto un pretesto per incontrarsi, anche vista la quantità e qualità degli interventi. Ho apprezzato molto le persone che sono intervenute e in particolare, trullallero trullallà, mi sono divertito ad ascoltare letture sofisticatissime estratte da una pubblicazione di cui non ricordo il nome.

Questa giornata mi ha fatto venire voglia di contribuire per quelle che sono le mie capacità professionali (alcuni direbbero skills riferendosi a me come ad uno skillato) soprattutto per quanto riguarda la diffusione dell’utilizzo di free software o, al limite, di software open source, in ambito aziendale (corporate e enterprise).

Probabilmente in uno dei prossimi post descriverò quelle che sono stae le mie esperienze professionali in merito e, soprattutto, il modo in cui, secondo me, si debba affrontare il discorso in un contesto aziendale.

Ringrazio Nicola Mattina per aver mi portato a conoscenza di una tale realtà alla quale spero di poter contribuire presto.

anch’io ho deciso di aprire un mio blog (e non so ancora se ho fatto una cosa “sana”). Pur “vivendo” nella rete dall’ormai preistorico (per l’evoluzione che essa ha avuto) 1992, anno in cui ho inviato la mia prima e-mail e pur operando professionalmente nel settore più o meno dallo stesso periodo, non sono un grande fruitore degli strumenti da Lei messi a disposizione, fatta eccezione per i motori di ricerca (inizialmente altavista e poi google) e poco altro.

Il primo impatto è un po’ sconcertante, per me. L’idea di avere una finestra più o meno pubblica con cui poter esprimere opinioni e giudizi, raccontare esperienze, in un certo senso mi preoccupa e al contempo mi attrae. Non avere un limite (oppure un indirizzo) in un certo senso paralizza rendendo difficile la scrittura di un semplice post come questo. Qualcuno di mia conoscenza potrebbe chiamarla “ansia da prestazione” e basta convincersi che probabilmente nessuno leggerà mai questo post per superarla (anche se in cuor mio spero di essere smentito).

Ancora non ho deciso di cosa parlerò in questo mio blog e forse non lo deciderò mai… Forse sarà lui a dirmi, a cose fatte, di cosa ho parlato e magari, a quel punto, potrei decidere di cambiarne il titolo.
